A warm welcome
It’s the dawn of a new age for software engineering.
“I believe that at the end of the century the use of words and general educated opinion will have altered so much that one will be able to speak of machines thinking without expecting to be contradicted.” — Alan Turing
a 1950 prediction from Computing Machinery and Intelligence
Writing from a perspective of prosperity - we, as a society, have reached a significant inflection point in history. For better or worse, AI has infiltrated nearly every aspect of our lives.
While I’d love to wax poetic on the moral, ethical and financial impacts of AI - each which should be discussed - as part of our foundation (!) we’re going to acknowledge three things:
AI is here and is shows no signs slowing down
AI has fundamentally changed software engineering
AI acts as mirror — engineering fundamentals matter even more
Foundations of Engineering has one goal:
Make all of us better software engineers — myself included.
What should I expect?
To start, Foundations is going to be organized into 3 types of articles:
Foundation - focused on the fundamentals - computer science, logic reasoning, system design, AI patterns, Agentic
Tutorial - practical applications of concepts and ideas discussed in Foundation articles
Editorial - trending topics, news, plugins and tools often with opinions
Our goal is *at least* one type of article per month, posted to Substack, social channels and our website but my hope is to grow that to once a week.
